Play Therapy
Some clients prefer a non-talking therapy. They may be very young for example
or simply don’t feel ready to talk about their experiences. Their
distress has shown itself in outward behaviours.
Young children like to be active and play therapy is better suited to their
needs than a sedentary counselling conversation. Play is the natural language
of communication for a child.
Play therapy has been clinically shown to benefit children suffering from
a range of distress and emotional disturbance. Counsellors with play therapy
skills, or one of our play/art therapists, will spend time with the client
building a trusting relationship through creative media.
We use creative approaches including sand trays, art, music, movement and
other media to help the client explore their feelings, thoughts or behaviours
'under the surface'. The child will make connections into their own world
through play which they would struggle to make verbally.
By doing this in a safe, therapeutic environment in which the child is
‘contained’ the therapist is able to help the child connect
with the emotional experiences they struggle with.
It is a child-centred and non-directive approach which moves at the speed
of the client .
